Before coming to a certain country to study and work, financial problems are always a concern for every student. Fortunately, although Japan has a comprehensive education system, the cost you have to spend when studying in Japan is much cheaper than countries in Europe or the US. That has helped Japan attract more than 312,000 students from all over the world in recent years.
TUITION
Normally, in the first year of studying at universities in Japan, you have to spend about 820.000 JPY (about 173.586 thousand VND) at a national university (there are still a few exceptions), 930.000 JPY (approximately 196.872.000 VND) at a local public university and 1.100.000 - 1.640.000 JPY (approximately 23.859.000 - 347.172.000 VND) at a private university (excluding Medical, Dentistry and Pharmaceuticals). The above amount includes admission fees, tuition fees, facility/equipment usage fees, among others, and is applicable for the first year only. It also means that in the following school years, you only need to pay school fees.
In addition, Japan has more scholarship or tuition reduction programs than other countries, which partly helps students who cannot afford to study here with peace of mind.
COST OF LIVING
Besides Tuition, you also have to spend a decent amount of money for living and studying in Japan. Normally, an international student spends about 89,000 JPY/month (about 18.840.000 VND) for living needs. And of course, the cost of living when you live in a big city will be more expensive, such as in Tokyo, international students often have to spend 100,000 JPY/month (about 21.169.000 VND) to cover living fees. But in Kyushu island, students only need to pay 72.000 JPY/month (about 15.242.000 VND) for living.
Rent accommodation
Usually, renting is the most expensive, not to mention finding affordable accommodation in highly competitive Japan. Therefore, you should actively look for a place to rent as soon as possible. International students can ask for the help of the foreign student office at your school to make the search easier.
However, depending on the region/city you live in and the type of house you rent, the rent may vary slightly. For example, if you rent a private apartment, you will have to pay 53.300 JPY/month (about 11.283.000 VND), but for a room in a student dormitory, you only need to spend about 28.000 JPY/month ( about 5.927.000 VND).
Therefore, depending on your needs and financial ability, you can choose and rent a place that is suitable for you.
Food
As a country with scarce resources, most goods, especially food, are imported by Japan from other countries. However, you should understand that Japanese culture attaches great importance to high-quality goods and services. Items from food, clothing to electronics as well as services in the food industry, hotels, etc. are expected by the Japanese to be the most luxurious goods. Therefore, accompanying this desire is the price that seems a bit expensive compared to some other Asian countries.
If you want to save a small fee on food, you can buy food at convenient supermarkets around where you live. The food there is both adequate and reasonably priced. However, don't neglect your health because you save money on food!
Travel expenses
Public transport in Japan is very efficient but comes at a reasonable price. Your travel costs will depend on the type of transport you use and the distance you want to travel.
Usually, students in Japan often walk if their accommodation is not far from their school, or walk to take the subway, bus or bike to school. Walking is both a way to save money and help us exercise every day. Thanks to a moderate, healthy diet and walking every day, the girls of the land of the rising sun have slim bodies. It's quite a chore, isn't it!
