The school year in Australia

The academic year in Australia starts in late January/early February (for Primary & Secondary) and late February/early March (for Colleges and Universities). From mid to late February there is usually a pre-admission week for new students. The 1-year period of Primary and Secondary education usually consists of 3 or 4 semesters.

Colleges & Universities typically have 2 semesters and end with a final exam in June and November. There will be 2-4 weeks of break from semester to semester. Summer break will run from November or December until February. Many courses may start at the beginning of each semester.

Australian Education system

The Australian formal education system for international students includes the following forms:

• Elementary & Middle School

School attendance is compulsory in Australia for all children aged 6-15. Students complete High School (approximately 18 years of age) to enter college. Students will then be required to take tests and assessments during Year 11 and Year 12 to earn the High School Diploma.
