Costs to study in Malaysia

According to the UNESCO 2016 assessment, studying in Malaysia ranked 9th in the top 20 best destinations in the world for international students. Aiming to become the sixth-largest education exporter worldwide by 2020, Malaysia's higher education is being significantly upgraded and gradually becoming a popular study abroad destination for foreign scholars.

TUITION FEES

Besides public universities, there are three types of private universities in Malaysia: private universities, international universities, and Malaysian private universities. International students in Malaysia also have the unique opportunity of studying a dual degree, or twinning, which means you can continue your studies to complete a Bachelor's degree at a relevant institution of the university in two countries other than Malaysia. Partner countries include the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, and the US.

Tuition fees for programs:

  • English: about 3,000 - 5,000 RM/term
  • University: from 32,000 RM/year
  • Postgraduate: from RM 53,500/year
  • Doctorate: from RM 42,000/year

COST OF LIVING

A good thing for students who choose to study in Malaysia is that the cost of living is relatively cheap. According to QS rankings, Kuala Lumpur is on top of the list of low-cost cities for students in 2017.

Accommodation

Monthly accommodation costs in Malaysia range around 300-600 RM (75-150 USD). This cost depends on the area you live in, types of housing (living in dormitories, inns, apartments, etc.) equipment (air-conditioned rooms or not). Students can share a room with friends to reduce the fees.

Sustenance

Food costs are estimated at 600 – 900 RM (150 – 225 USD)/month. This price is calculated based on 3 meals/day. If you cook for yourself or cook with friends, this cost will be cheaper.

Clothes and laundry

The cost of washing and ironing clothes is about 60 RM (15 USD)/month.

Public transportation

Other travel fees are around 80-150 RM (20-37.5 USD)/month (Students staying on or near campus will not have to pay this fee while attending school).

Communication

On Average, each student will spend about 30-50 RM ( 7.50 - 12.50 USD) / 1 month (depending on how you use it and the promotions of the network operator).

Books and school things

Approximately 50-100 RM (12.50 - 25 USD )/month (depends on the course you sign up for and the number of projects).

SOLUTIONS FOR FINANCIAL PROBLEMS WHEN STUDYING MALAYSIA

a. Part-time job while studying in Malaysia

International students are allowed to work part-time with a salary of around 5-7 RM/hour (up to 20 hours a week during semester breaks or more than 7 days off) when studying in Malaysia, subject to entry regulations.

b. Scholarship

Scholarships to study in Malaysia are various. Schools usually offer scholarships for worldwide students. You should regularly check the websites of educational institutions or organizations that interest you. Furthermore, depending on the different scholarship programs, there are requirements for academic scores, English certificates, certificates of extracurricular activities, or other terms for essays, interviews, etc.
