How to study well in Malaysia

How to study well in Malaysia

Malaysia is one of the top 11 favorite destinations worldwide. According to the American magazine Newsweek, in a survey of the best countries in the world, Malaysia’s rank is in the top 8 in the education category. The Malaysian government also focuses mainly on renewing its education and strengthening its development philosophy. Not only that, for the past few years, Malaysia has widened its arms and welcomed foreigners of all nationalities to work, creating a dynamic environment for working and studying.

Therefore, at present, parents in Vietnam are also paying attention to choosing this country as a destination for their children’s learning journey.

Benefits of studying in Malaysia

  • An internationalized education: Depending on where you choose to study, you will be exposed to teaching styles or learning environments influenced by distinct cultures. The learning culture in Malaysia is somewhat more relaxed than in the British model, requiring students to be self-conscious about subject requests and manage their own learning process.
  • No need for financial proofing or interview
  • No need for an international English language certificate (IELTS/TOEFL)
  • Create an opportunity for students to receive an Honor degree (Honours) as part of a Bachelor’s degree: Entry standards vary from each program, but always require good academic grades and an additional year of study. Honor students will need to complete a research paper in their final year, such as a thesis or independent research project. Students have to separate their applications for the Honor program as well as carefully research the separate submission for this program.

Regulations for international students

  • Students must apply to immigration authorities to be able to work part-time while studying in Malaysia.
  • Students are allowed to work up to 20 hours/week and can extend this when students have good study results. However, this is limited to employment in restaurants, gas stations, mini markets, and hotels.
  • The Department of Higher Education mandates that all international students apply for health insurance through the university they attend.
  • Depending on the terms of the insurance, not all medical expenses will be covered.

Tips for you when studying in Malaysia

  • Communication: In Malaysia, communication is a matter of great concern, based on courtesy and diplomacy. Unlike in many other places, in Malaysia, you need to be conscious when expressing yourself and your opinions publicly.
  • Flight tickets: When booking tickets to Malaysia, you must send all of your flight information to the school, including the airport’s address, your flight number, date, and time.
  • Clothes: In Malaysia, the culture of secrecy is strictly compliant. Therefore, female students should wear clothes of the appropriate length, enough to cover their legs and upper arms. No shorts, except while you are at the beach.
  • Currency: Cash for all living expenses and settling down in the first month, ranging from 500 to 1.000 USD. More than 7.000 in cash must be declared to Customs. Opening a domestic Malaysian bank account will save you money.
  • Documents:

- Student Pass: When you are admitted to a university in Malaysia, the school will apply for a Student Pass for you. You must submit the required documents and pay a fee to the school for application.

- Once the application is approved, the document certifying your eligibility for the Student Pass will be sent to your school. Then the original certificate will be sent to you in Vietnam, along with a certified copy that you are qualified to study abroad (Personal Bond).

- These documents will be the temporary Student Pass that allows you to come to Malaysia as a student. Note: You will NOT be allowed to enter Malaysia without a Student Pass.

- The highest degree you have obtained

- Birth certificate

- Report cards

- Passport

- 10 4x6 photos

- Application form (according to the schools’ form)

Note: All the important documents should be scanned onto your laptop or USB for measurement since you will travel to many places.

Save emergency numbers (police, ambulance) on your phone just in case.
