How to study well in the United States

The United States has welcomed the largest number of international students in the world with more than 1,000,000 people. In particular, nearly 5% of all students enrolled in universities in the US are international students and this number continues to increase. Vietnamese parents have also shown interest in finding an effective study path in the US for their children.

  • Academic flexibility: Universities in America provide a wide range of majors for international students to choose from. Several typical majors worth considering: Information Technology, Chemical Engineering - Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Business & Administration, Creative Arts & Design, Technology, Medical & Healthcare Majors, and Communications.

  • The internationally largest place for conversing and working is created in this culturally rich and dynamic nation.

Requirements for international students in the US

  • You have to meet the language skills requirements of your desired schools or majors. For example, enrolling in colleges requires an IELTS band 5.5 or a 61 TOEFL iBT score while universities require at least an IELTS band 6.0 or a 79 TOEFL iBT score.
  • Students (F1 visa) can work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session. You can work full-time on campus during holidays and vacation periods if you intend to register for the next academic semester.

Before traveling to the US

  • Plan your trip as soon as possible.
  • Pay attention to procedures: accurate information in your documents, evidence for financial ability, choosing the right type of visa, visa interview questions, “clean” travel history. Seek a professional consultant or organization for support in this process.
  • Avoid long trips near the date of boarding. Bring your own medicines or prescribed ones (if any).
  • Learn as much as you can about the country in advance so as to avoid social misfit in a brand new environment.
  • Choose your place of settling in advance. Renting or sharing a room would help save your living expenses. You can also buy second-hand products to save more money.
  • Enhance your English skills so as to easily communicate and socialize in America.
  • Bring comfortable clothes but do not forget your jackets, sweaters, and scarves for colder days.
  • Do not bring too much luggage since there are goods with reasonable prices available in the US, pack only your most essential belongings.
  • Prepare electrical adapters. For the USA there are two associated plug types, types A and B.

While studying in the US

You need to study and practice proactively because no one will be there to follow you closely and remind you of your studies, you have to work hard by yourself to achieve the desired results. If there are any problems or difficulties, do not hesitate to ask your teachers or the school's support office for support, they are always willing to listen and help you.

Since living expenses in the US are considerably expensive, you need to have a clear budget plan: List your monthly sources of income, including part-time jobs’ earnings and allowance from parents, then record your estimated expenses to reduce unnecessary expenses.

In order to reduce your tuition fees, you can choose the Co.op program (working while studying); or save money in the first 2 years of college by choosing the combined college-university program with 2 years of college and 2 years of university; especially, the High School Completion program provides a 2-to-3-year academic session of high school and college, which would save a lot of your money since tuition fees in college are much lower than those in universities and private high schools. International students cannot enroll in public high schools in the US.
