Kindergarten
Attending kindergartens in Korea (for children aged 3-5) is not compulsory, so parents have to register directly at their desired school.
Primary education
Children attend primary schools at the age of 6. Primary schools consist of 6 years, from grade 1 to grade 6.
Secondary education
After finishing grade 6, students will attend secondary schools. Secondary education consists of middle school (grade 7 – grade 9) and high school (grade 10 – grade 12).
Higher Education
The Korean school system is well-known for being top-quality considering students’ achievement in standard exams: this country is ranked as one of the best by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) of OECD.
Korea is ranked 22 in 50 countries in the Ranking of National Higher Education Systems by 21 research universities of Universitas. Meanwhile, this country is ranked 12 in 35 countries in the “World Educating for the Future Index” category of the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Higher education in Korea consists of:
- College (2 – 3 years): After finishing programs: completing from 75 to 80 credits of the two-year program or at least 120 credits of the three-year program, students will get an Associate Degree.
- University (4 years): After finishing 4 years in university (completing at least 130 credits) or 5-6 years for higher specialized majors, students will get a Bachelor’s Degree.

Degree Program

International students can enroll in a degree program offered in regular semesters by schools. Students will get a degree after completing this program, which is taught either in English or Korean.

Exchange Student Program

Most educational institutions offer exchange student programs based on the agreement with foreign universities.

Summer/Winter Program

Universities offer regular courses and Korean language courses through summer/winter programs.

Programs taught in English
|
About 30% of the courses are taught in English. There are also International Studies faculties in some schools where all courses are taught in English

Korean Language Programs
|
Korean Language Institutions of some universities offer Korean courses to improve students’ communication skills.

Postgraduate Education
- Master’s program: requires at least 2 years of studying and completing 24 credits. After that, students must pass a qualification test, then write and submit a Master’s thesis.
- Doctoral Program: requires at least 3 years of studying and completing 36 credits. After that, students must pass a qualification test, then write and submit a doctoral thesis.
Postgraduate institutions also offer post-doctoral programs for those who want to continue to conduct research after getting a doctoral degree.

Enrollment requirements
For secondary education
- A copy of the graduation certificate or diploma issued in English.
- A report card in English sent directly by the school where you attended.
For higher education
- A report card in English sent directly by the school where you attended.
- For completed doctoral programs, a written statement from the research institute showing degree issued date and major.
